A professional story breakdown

A 2min story breakdown

Mes amis,

Welcome, welcome! Please have a seat and welcome to the house 🏠

Can I get you something? A smooth hot drink? Refreshing cold beverage?

In the meantime, help yourself to this week's (and next week's) issue

We’re trying something new this week mes amis.

A case study breakdown 👀

The case study we’ll be looking at?

My previous job interview which I had passed a couple of weeks ago.

I’ll be exploring two areas you can use this week and the following week to get ahead and stand out above your peers.

The equation used to dazzle and captivate the interviewers was a lockbox of stories I've cultivated.

This is a unique case because it’s the first time we’ll be exploring using stories in a professional setting.

You’re probably wondering, “How do I tell a professional story?”

With the same energy you tell your stories to friends and family, with personality.

But keep it brief and focused.

To do that, first, you need to do your research (beyond researching interview questions).

Research your audience, spend time investigating your interviewers, and bring them into your story.

How?

You can use the framework Before-After-Bridge (BAB).

This is a trick I learned from copywriting and it is super effective for persuasion.

You need to start by reminding the audience of their current state, focusing on their pain.

In this case, it’d be:

  • The financial cost of marketing on job boards

  • Making sure the prospect is a cultural fit

  • Spending crucial time trying to find a team fit

  • Trying to ensure the prospect is in this for the long run

The ‘After’ comes in when you talk about the sunshine and rainbows the company will enjoy after hiring you.

This is where you strut your stuff and demonstrate what your value is.

Talk about the activities that aren't on your CV, the accomplishments on your CV which tease how amazing you'd be for the company.

Get them excited on the wonderful future they'll have working with you.

The ‘Bridge’ is the final part of this and this is where you’ll show the interviewer how you’ll positively impact their company.

Demonstrate how your contribution will:

  • Increase profits

  • Reduce costs

  • Improve productivity

  • Improve employee satisfaction

Plus a lot more.

If you can talk about the ideas you have for them and tie that into a story of where you'll succeed before you'll be on to a winner mes amis.

So shout and flaunt what you got but remember it’ll only stick if you’ve written and practised a great story.

A bientot 👋🏿

Wall of Inspiration

I was shaken up on Friday.

I had walked into my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class with a man lying dead on the floor.

His body was motionless and quickly becoming pale.

If it wasn't for the quick reactions of my brethren and the first responders he wouldn't be breathing as I write.

He was lucky to have come to class that morning because he was suffering from a heart condition he had no clue about.

If he was walking home by himself it would have been a different story for him and his loved ones.

Be sure to get yourselves checked people. Better to be safe than dead.
